Now that I've officially been in my home for one year, I thought it would be great to review some of the furniture & decor I've purchased and share my thoughts and experiences. One of the most exciting things about moving to Texas was the opportunity for me to upgrade my furniture to "investment" pieces (AKA bougieville). I spent hours scrolling through websites of stores I always dreamed of purchasing from and ultimately decided on pieces from Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Crate & Barrel, and CB2. In my upcoming home decor posts, I'll let you know the items I chose, my experience with the company, and how I feel now after living with them for a year.
For the first post, we're starting with one of my favorite rooms in the house - my bedroom. I purchased my main furniture from Pottery Barn and CB2; read on to get all the tea from cost to delivery to if I would buy again. I've also included details on some of the smaller, budget-friendly decor items. One day I'll live the full-on bougie dream, but for now, we balance bougie with a budget, okay?
Note that the pricing listed is what I paid for the item at the time of purchase (mostly May-August 2021). Current prices may be higher or lower than what is below.
Meet Oakleigh
When I moved to Texas, I got rid of all my furniture, which left me primed and ready to live out one of my biggest home decor fantasies - getting a legit bedroom set. I scoured the innanets high and low to find the perfect "mature" set that fit my vibe and color scheme. I never thought this would be my style, but even after a year, I love it just as much as the day I found it. Let me introduce you to Oakleigh.
I found the Oakleigh set online in May 2021 before selling my Cincinnati house. I saw how far out the expected delivery date was estimated, so I purchased the bed, dresser, and two nightstands sight unseen. I visited my local Pottery Barn store to see if any pieces were on display. There was nothing available in the store; they didn't even have a wood swatch I could see. I was nervous the wood wouldn't look like the pictures online or that the hardware would be more brown than black (if there is one thing I hate about furniture & decor, it's when the coloring is off). I had no idea if I would love or hate the Oakleigh set once I saw it in person. Finally, after months of being in-between homes, I had my bedroom set delivered the day after I closed on my Texas house.
Pottery Barn offers white glove delivery, meaning they will hand deliver the furniture into a room of your choosing, assemble it, and discard all of the packaging materials. The delivery team that brought my set was excellent. They arrived on time, were friendly, and I had a fully functioning bedroom set by the time they left without lifting a finger. Once the delivery team was gone, I finally had the chance to take in the entire room. I was pleasantly surprised that the whole set looked exactly like it did online! I am particular about literally everything, especially when it comes to colors and tones, so trust me when I say the Oakleigh set is impeccable on every level. I love the warmth and tone of the wood, especially in contrast with the dark hardware. This decor style is very different from anything I've had in the past, but I am loving every second of it.
Full disclosure, I love the way Pottery Barn styled the bed so much that I went and duplicated their approach in my entire bedroom. Don't be surprised when you see the resemblance.
How has it held up?
Spectacularly! I have no complaints about this bedroom set. The wood is solid, the hardware is durable, and it still looks as beautiful as it did the day it was delivered. It does need to be dusted and maintained just like any other furniture, but it is genuinely a vibe if there ever was one.
Customer service/delivery experience
Pottery Barn has excellent customer service. My order was ready before initially estimated, and they were able to hold it in the warehouse for me until I closed on my house. I had to call a couple of times to change the delivery date/address and never had any issues.
Cost: $5,136.47 (including tax and white glove delivery)
Oakleigh Canopy Bed: $1,999
Oakleigh 7-Drawer Dresser: $1,499
Oakleigh 25" Nightstands: $998 total
Would I purchase again?
Yes!
Pro tip
Sign up for the Pottery Barn rewards! With this large order, I immediately earned hundreds of dollars in points that I then used to purchase new bedding.
To Infinity
I was looking for a full-length mirror for my room to ensure I didn't look a mess every time I left the house. Obviously. I wanted something sleek that could hold its own next to the substantial size of the Oakleigh set. Enter in CB2 with the Infinity floor mirror. When I tell you I'm obsessed with this mirror… I'm obsessed. It never fails to make me, and anyone else who stands in front of it, look incredible. The reflection is true; there is no funhouse effect even with the significant size. Since it's an infinity mirror, it has an edgeless look that enlarges the room and allows plenty of light to bounce off it to fill the space. This mirror is a versatile piece that would look fantastic in any space, large or small.
How has it held up?
Amazingly, but to be fair, it's been leaning against the wall exactly where the delivery guy placed it last fall. I will say that I haven't needed to mount it; it's not moved or slid out from the wall since it's been placed.
Customer service/delivery experience
Excellent - I had zero issues with CB2. My only angst with the mirror was that it was showing In Stock, but I still had to wait over four weeks for a delivery date due to limited availability.
Cost: $452.65 (including tax, white glove delivery, and a small discount)
Would I purchase again?
Yes
Pro tip
Read reviews! There are so many mirrors on the market that look stylish but have faulty glass that gives a "fun house" effect. Every review on this mirror was consistent, giving me the confidence to purchase.
Finishing Touches
As I mentioned above, I loved how Pottery Barn paired the Oakleigh set with white linens and clear lamps, so I knew I had to replicate that style. In addition to the bedroom set and Infinity mirror, I finished my room with new bedding, curtains, and a couple of (old and new) lamps.
Duvet Cover & Euro Shams
Purchased from: Pottery Barn
Total Cost: $139.65
Worth it?: Yes, because I used points to pay for most of it. I'm not sure I would pay the full price for the duvet, but I'm not unsatisfied with it.
Sheets
Purchased from: Brooklinen
Total Cost: $155.02
Luxe Core Sheet Set: $143.20 on sale
Worth it?: Yes! I absolutely love Brooklinen, and these are the best sheets I've ever owned. I bought my first set in December 2020, and they are still holding up amazingly! They are pricey, though, so try to get them on sale if you can.
Throw Blanket
Purchased from: CB2
Total Cost: $44.97
Hive black waffle weave blanket: $44.97 on sale
It looks like they no longer have the black option for sale, but they do have this graphite color.
Worth it?: Kind of. I mainly use this blanket as an accent piece, but it is a heavier material and adds warmth to my toes in the winter months.
Curtains
Purchased from: Wayfair
Total Cost: $244.32
Brockham Solid Room Darkening Grommet Curtain Panels (set of 2): $81.44 per pack
Worth it?: Yes, but only for the look. I couldn't find any other curtains with this same style. Note that these are NOT blackout curtains. I have blackout shades installed in my room, so I could forgive that false advertising because the curtains are so adorable.
Curtain Rods
Purchased from: Amazon
Total Cost: $99.14
Worth it?: Yes, especially for the price!
Table Lamps
Purchased from: At Home
Total Cost: ~$40 per lamp (each component sold separately)
Clear glass accent lamp 15" (base): Honestly, I can't remember and don't have my receipt, but it's on clearance for $14.99 right now.
Black accent lamp shade: Again, I can't remember, but it's very similar to this one for $12.99.
Worth it?: Yes! I was able to get the look I wanted on a budget. You have to hunt around to find the right base and lampshade that coordinate well together, but it's totally worth it.
Floor Lamp
Purchased from: IKEA
Total Cost: ~ $70
Vidja floor lamp: I bought this for my first solo apartment in 2015. I have no idea how much I spent, but I think it was around $70. Right now, it's priced at $69.99.
Worth it: I bought it in 2015, and it's still working perfectly, so yes!
Overall, my bedroom fits the upgraded look I was going for with my new home. Still, I wouldn't necessarily call it 100% complete. I would love to get a rug to finish out the space, but that bed is 300lbs., so I may have to keep sleeping on that dream. I may or may not add some wall art but, for me, the minimalist vibe is giving. Beyond that, I'm not sure what changes I would make. What else would you add to my room? Let me know in the comments.
